When pip is installing and extracting a maliciously crafted wheel archive, files may be extracted outside the installation directory. The path traversal is limited to prefixes of the installation directory, thus isn't able to inject or overwrite executable files in typical situations.

CVE-2026-1703 is a path traversal vulnerability classified under CWE-22 found in the Python Packaging Authority's pip tool, which is widely used for installing Python packages. The vulnerability occurs during the installation and extraction process of wheel archives (.whl files). Specifically, when pip extracts a maliciously crafted wheel archive, it may write files outside the intended installation directory by exploiting path traversal sequences in the archive's file paths. However, the traversal is constrained to prefixes of the installation directory, which limits the ability to overwrite or inject executable files in typical scenarios.
