CVE-2026-54542 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the Nimiq core-rs-albatross Rust implementation of the Albatross consensus algorithm. A malicious state-sync peer can cause a syncing node to crash by sending a specially crafted TrieChunk with a proof containing a TrieNodeChild suffix that exceeds the allowed backing array length. This triggers an out-of-bounds panic before cryptographic proof verification, causing the node to restart and resynchronize. The issue is fixed in version 1.6.0.
