CVE-2024-40899 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's cachefiles subsystem, specifically in the cachefiles_ondemand_get_fd() function. The flaw occurs when a restore command is issued while the daemon is still active, causing a request to be processed multiple times and leading to a use-after-free condition. This issue was discovered through fuzz testing and involves improper reference counting of requests. The vulnerability has been fixed by adding an additional reference count to prevent multiple completions of the same request.
