CVE-2024-41088 is a medium-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's mcp251xfd CAN driver. The flaw causes an infinite loop in the interrupt routine when the mcp251xfd_start_xmit() function fails to transmit a message, particularly under concurrent access conditions on a shared SPI bus. This leads to the driver halting message processing and the interrupt handler running indefinitely, even after the application is terminated. The issue arises because the transmit ring buffer head pointer increments despite transmission failure, causing the driver to wait for a response to a skipped transmit package. The vulnerability has been fixed by modifying the driver to handle transmission errors correctly, including synchronous retries and proper buffer management.
