Contrast (edgelesssys/contrast) versions from 1.14.0 up to but not including 1.23.1 have a vulnerability where runtime policies fail to detect all container image substitutions. This is due to an erroneous 'allow_storage' rule introduced during a Kata Containers update that accepts storage entries using the 'image_guest_pull' driver without verifying the image digest. An attacker with access to the Kata agent API, such as a Kubernetes cluster administrator, can substitute a container image with a malicious payload if the substituted image meets other policy rules, compromising the integrity of confidential containers.
