The npm package eko-tiwul9-remi was identified as containing malicious code linked to the tea.xyz token reward campaign that flooded the npm registry with over 15,000 spam packages in 2024. This malware uses autopublish scripts to automatically generate and publish derivative packages with randomized Indonesian-themed names. The payload modifies package.json files by removing private flags and changing version numbers, enabling continuous republishing of variants to inflate developer reputation scores and pollute the npm registry.
