The npm package vina-empal92-riris contains malicious code linked to a large-scale spam campaign involving over 15,000 packages in 2024. These packages use autopublish scripts to automatically generate and publish derivative packages with randomized Indonesian-themed names. The malicious payload modifies package.json files to remove private flags, alters version numbers, and continuously republishes variants to inflate developer reputation scores for the tea.xyz token reward system, thereby polluting the npm registry.
