The npm package wati-wajit50-ruro contains malicious code linked to a large-scale spam campaign flooding npm with over 15,000 packages in 2024. These packages include scripts that automatically generate and publish derivative packages with randomized names to manipulate developer reputation scores for the tea.xyz token reward system. The malicious payload alters package.json files by removing private flags, changing version numbers, and generating random Indonesian-themed package names, resulting in continuous republishing of variants that pollute the npm registry.
