The npm package 'vaults-monitor-cron' version 999.0.0 is a malicious package designed to exfiltrate sensitive credentials during installation. Its preinstall script collects environment variables and system information, filtering for keys and secrets, then sends this data to a hardcoded external IP address. The package uses a dependency confusion tactic by mimicking an internal package with a high version number and a misleading description.
