In September, an organization was targeted by the Akira ransomware, where attackers gained initial access via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The adversary disabled antivirus protections on the compromised endpoint, used Rclone for data exfiltration, and employed a GOST tunneling tool to maintain persistence. After these preparatory steps, the ransomware payload was deployed. Forensic analysis identified key indicators of compromise including specific file paths, SHA256 hashes of malicious binaries, and the command and control (C2) server IP address used for tunnel communications.

In January 2026, researchers identified a sophisticated malware framework dubbed OkoBot that targets cryptocurrency users through a multi-stage infection chain. The campaign begins with TookPS PowerShell scripts delivered via ClickFix attacks or fake software on GitHub. An automated SSH bot deploys over 20 malicious modules including HDUtil launcher, browser extension injectors installing Rilide stealer, and specialized tools like SeedHunter for wallet seed phrase theft and OkoSpyware for window capture. The framework uses VMProtect obfuscation, UAC bypass techniques, and maintains persistence through RDP access and scheduled tasks. Victims span more than 25 countries with concentrations in Brazil, Vietnam, Canada, Mexico, and Turkey. Attribution suggests Russian-speaking threat actors based on geoblocking patterns and Russian language artifacts.

An intrusion attributed to MuddyWater, an Iranian-linked APT, was identified in a customer environment. The attack involved initial access through RDP, establishing an SSH tunnel, and deploying malware via DLL side-loading. The threat actor used FMAPP.exe, a legitimate Fortemedia Inc.application, to load a malicious FMAPP.dll for C2 communications. The timeline of activities revealed typos in commands, suggesting manual typing by the attacker. The intrusion included reconnaissance efforts, attempts to verify tunnel functionality, and issues with initial C2 communication. The attack targeted an Israeli company, aligning with known MuddyWater tactics.

A threat actor gained initial access to a network via RDP using compromised credentials, likely obtained through an infostealer, data breach, or initial access broker. They quickly moved laterally to a domain controller, created multiple impersonation accounts with high privileges, and installed AnyDesk for persistence. Over nine days, the actor conducted extensive network reconnaissance using SoftPerfect NetScan and NetExec, mapped virtualization infrastructure, and browsed file shares. They exfiltrated sensitive data from multiple shares using temp.sh. On the final day, the actor connected to backup servers, deleted backup jobs, and deployed Lynx ransomware across multiple servers. The intrusion lasted 178 hours and leveraged compromised domain admin credentials throughout.

A new ransomware variant called KawaLocker (KAWA4096) was recently observed in an attack. The threat actor gained initial access via RDP using a compromised account and employed various tools to disable security measures. HRSword, a monitoring tool, was deployed along with kernel drivers sysdiag.sys and hrwfpdr.sys. The attacker used PsExec to enable RDP on additional endpoints. KawaLocker ransomware was then deployed against the E:\ volume, encrypting files and leaving a ransom note. Post-encryption, the attacker deleted Volume Shadow Copies, cleared Windows Event Logs, and removed the ransomware executable. The incident highlights the importance of detecting and remediating such attacks promptly.

A new ransomware variant named Crux has been identified, claiming association with the BlackByte group. Observed in three separate incidents, Crux encrypts files with a .crux extension and leaves ransom notes. Initial access appears to involve Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) using valid credentials. The ransomware executable, with varying names and locations, follows a distinct process tree involving svchost.exe, cmd.exe, and bcdedit.exe. It disables system recovery to hinder restoration attempts. Data exfiltration using Rclone was observed in one incident. The threat actor demonstrates prior knowledge of targeted infrastructures and prefers using legitimate Windows processes. While claiming BlackByte affiliation, this hasn't been independently verified.

This report details a cyberattack where threat actors gained initial access through a password spray attack on an exposed RDP server. They used Mimikatz and Nirsoft for credential harvesting, and employed living-off-the-land techniques along with tools like Advanced IP Scanner for network discovery. The attackers utilized Rclone for data exfiltration via SFTP and deployed RansomHub ransomware across the network using SMB and remote services. The intrusion lasted six days, culminating in widespread encryption and ransom demands. Key phases included initial access, lateral movement, credential theft, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment, demonstrating a sophisticated and multi-staged attack methodology.
