Cybercriminals are using fake websites that mimic the legitimate Bitrefill site to defraud users. These lookalike sites appear in search engine results and use domains similar to Bitrefill's, including Punycode variants. Victims are tricked into completing checkout processes that resemble Bitrefill's, paying cryptocurrency to attacker-controlled addresses with no recovery option. The campaign uses sophisticated analytics to optimize victim conversion, indicating organized criminal activity.

A compromised Joomla website displayed suspicious product links unrelated to the business. Investigation revealed heavily obfuscated PHP code injected at the top of index.php that contacted external command-and-control servers to receive instructions and manipulate content. The malware acts as a remote loader, assembling strings from two-character chunks to evade signature-based detection. It contacts primary C2 cdn.erpsaz.com and fallback cdn.saholerp.com, sending server fingerprint data and receiving dynamic instructions. Based on responses, it redirects visitors, injects spam content, or serves fake SEO pages to search engines. This approach allows attackers to control compromised sites remotely without modifying local files again, enabling dynamic spam injection, visitor redirection, and search engine manipulation while remaining undetected for extended periods.

A Chinese-speaking cybercrime group, REF4033, has orchestrated a massive SEO poisoning campaign, compromising over 1,800 Windows web servers worldwide using the BADIIS malware. The campaign operates in two phases: serving keyword-stuffed HTML to search engine crawlers and redirecting victims to illicit websites. The group deploys BADIIS, a malicious IIS module, to hijack legitimate servers for manipulating search engine rankings and facilitating financial fraud. The campaign primarily targets the APAC region, with China and Vietnam accounting for 82% of compromised servers. Victims span various sectors, including government agencies, educational institutions, and financial services. The attackers use sophisticated techniques for stealth and anti-tampering, employing Chinese encryption standards and commercial obfuscation tools.

A sophisticated SEO spam infection was discovered utilizing a cleverly crafted plugin that mimics the infected domain's name to avoid detection. The malware injects spam content into websites, targeting search engine rankings, and only activates under specific conditions like when a crawler is detected. The plugin's code is heavily obfuscated, using thousands of variable assignments broken into small parts. When decoded, the malware downloads files from external hosts, fetches remote content, and delivers custom spam to search engines while appearing normal to regular users. The attacker's domain, mag1cw0rld[.]com, is used for remote control. This technique allows the spam to remain undetected for longer periods, making it challenging to identify with traditional tools.
