ThreatDown researchers discovered CARBONATO, a Docker botnet that exploits exposed Docker daemons on port 2375. The operation was uncovered through an unauthenticated Docker registry exposed since May 2026, revealing two parallel activities: distribution of trojanized cryptocurrency wallet applications and a botnet infrastructure. The botnet leverages Hermes Agent, an MIT-licensed open-source AI framework, modified with a custom prompt directing it to execute commands via Telegram, maintain persistence, and harvest credentials. The campaign infrastructure spans multiple hosting providers including Linode, Hetzner, and Contabo, with activity documented from October 2024 through August 2026.

AI agents are increasingly vulnerable to indirect prompt injection (IPI) attacks, where malicious instructions are embedded in web content to manipulate AI-driven workflows. Two campaigns were identified that combine SEO poisoning with CSS/HTML abuse to influence AI decision-making. The first campaign uses fake API documentation to trick AI agents into making fraudulent payments for a fake Python library, incorporating hidden instructions in JSON-LD and CSS-concealed content directing payment of $3.00 via Stripe or approximately 0.0012 ETH to attacker wallets. The second campaign employs typosquatting to impersonate DeBank, a cryptocurrency portfolio tracker, embedding hidden prompts to make the fraudulent site appear as an authoritative source. Testing across 26 LLMs revealed 4 models were vulnerable to the payment scam and 2 models misclassified the typosquatting site, demonstrating measurable real-world impact.

An exposed open directory revealed a comprehensive Roundcube exploitation toolkit used by APT28 to target Ukrainian government entities. The toolkit includes XSS payloads, a Flask-based C2 server, CSS injection tools, and a Go-based implant. It enables credential harvesting, persistent mail forwarding, bulk email exfiltration, address book theft, and 2FA secret extraction. The primary target was identified as mail.dmsu.gov.ua, Ukraine's State Migration Service. Technical analysis shows significant overlaps with previously documented APT28 operations, while introducing new capabilities such as CSS-based side-channel attacks and browser credential theft. The toolkit's modular approach and sophisticated evasion techniques demonstrate APT28's evolving tactics in compromising webmail platforms for long-term intelligence gathering.

Shai-Hulud 2.0 is a highly aggressive and automated supply-chain malware targeting the npm ecosystem, identified in November 2025. It rapidly compromises hundreds of npm packages within hours, behaving like a worm that harvests credentials and cloud secrets. The malware leverages GitHub Actions as a persistent backdoor and creates public repositories to exfiltrate stolen data. This attack represents a significant escalation in supply-chain attack sophistication, affecting major projects and organizations globally. It results in tens of thousands of attacker-created GitHub repositories, facilitating widespread propagation. The malware automates spreading to new npm accounts, increasing infection speed and scale. It does not require user interaction once initial compromise occurs and exploits trusted software supply chains. No CVE or patch is currently available, and no known exploits in the wild have been reported yet. The attack’s medium severity rating may underestimate its potential impact given its worm-like behavior and credential theft capabilities.
