Description

A vulnerability in the EIGRP implementation of Cisco Secure Firewall ASA and Threat Defense Software allows an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause device reloads resulting in denial of service. The issue stems from improper resource management when processing EIGRP update messages, which can lead to a memory leak and subsequent device crash.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-20222 describes a vulnerability in Cisco Secure Firewall Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) Software's EIGRP implementation. The flaw involves improper resource management when handling EIGRP update messages. An unauthenticated attacker with adjacent network access can exploit this by sending crafted EIGRP updates at a high rate, triggering a memory leak that causes the device to reload unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation leads to a denial of service (DoS) by causing the affected device to reload unexpectedly due to a memory leak. This disrupts network security and routing functionality but does not impact confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, limit access to EIGRP update message processing from untrusted adjacent networks to reduce exposure.
