A patch is available and should be applied. The issue is fixed in LXD 5.21.4 and 6.5. The fix changes the error handling in the imagesGet function to always return a 403 error to unauthenticated users regardless of project existence, preventing attackers from distinguishing project existence via HTTP status codes. Users should upgrade to these fixed versions to mitigate this vulnerability.
Description
CVE-2025-54291 is an information disclosure vulnerability in Canonical's LXD API allowing unauthenticated users to determine the existence of projects by observing differing HTTP status codes returned from the /1.0/images endpoint. The API returns a 404 error for non-existent projects and a 403 error for existing projects without viewing permissions. This behavior leaks project existence information but does not expose project resource details. The issue is fixed in LXD versions 5.21.4 and 6.5.
