Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: wpdevteam
Product: NotificationX – FOMO, Live Sales Notification, WooCommerce Sales Popup, GDPR, Social Proof, Announcement Banner & Floating Notification Bar

Description

The NotificationX – Best FOMO, Social Proof, WooCommerce Sales Popup & Notification Bar Plugin With Elementor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the 'type' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.8.2 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-1698 is a critical SQL Injection vulnerability in the NotificationX WordPress plugin (up to version 2.8.2). The issue arises from improper neutralization of special elements in the 'type' parameter, which is used directly in SQL queries without sufficient escaping or prepared statements. This allows unauthenticated attackers to append arbitrary SQL commands, potentially compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the underlying database.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of the database, including unauthorized data disclosure, data manipulation, and potential denial of service. Given the unauthenticated nature of the vulnerability and the high CVSS score, the impact is critical for affected sites using this plugin version.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, it is recommended to disable or remove the vulnerable plugin version to prevent exploitation. Monitor official channels from wpdevteam for updates and apply patches promptly once available.
