AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading to Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-1046.49~22.04.1 or later as listed in the fixed versions. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms these fixes. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2025-38089 is a critical vulnerability in the Linux kernel's sunrpc subsystem where improper handling of SVC_GARBAGE during RPC authentication processing can cause a kernel crash or memory corruption. The flaw arises when a specially crafted packet causes the kernel RPC server to dereference a NULL pointer or corrupt memory. The issue is fixed by treating SVC_GARBAGE returns as authentication errors (AUTH_BADCRED) instead of GARBAGE_ARGS, preventing the crash.
