Published: Fri Oct 03 2025 (10/03/2025, 18:11:36 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: QNAP Systems Inc.
Product: QTS

Description

A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability has been reported to affect several QNAP operating system versions. If a remote attacker gains an administrator account, they can then exploit the vulnerability to launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following versions: QTS 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later QuTS hero h5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later

Technical Analysis

CVE-2025-52433 is a medium-severity vulnerability identified in QNAP Systems Inc.'s QTS operating system, specifically affecting versions 5.2.x. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-476, which corresponds to a NULL pointer dereference issue. This type of vulnerability occurs when the software attempts to access or dereference a pointer that has a NULL value, leading to unexpected behavior such as application crashes or system instability. In this case, the flaw allows a remote attacker who has already obtained administrator-level access to the QTS system to exploit the vulnerability to trigger a denial-of-service (DoS) condition. The DoS attack results from the system crashing or becoming unresponsive due to the NULL pointer dereference, thereby disrupting availability of the affected QNAP device. The vulnerability does not require user interaction and can be exploited remotely over the network, but it does require the attacker to have administrator privileges on the device, which limits the initial attack vector. The CVSS v4.0 base score of 5.1 reflects a medium severity, driven by the network attack vector, low complexity, no user interaction, and the requirement for high privileges. The vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but affects availability by causing service disruption. QNAP has addressed this issue in QTS versions 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later, as well as in QuTS hero h5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later. No known exploits are currently reported in the wild, indicating limited active exploitation at this time.

Potential Impact

For European organizations using QNAP NAS devices running vulnerable QTS 5.2.x versions, this vulnerability poses a risk primarily to system availability. Since QNAP devices are commonly used for data storage, backup, and file sharing in enterprise and SMB environments, a successful DoS attack could disrupt critical business operations, data accessibility, and continuity of services. The requirement for administrator privileges means that the threat is more likely to arise from insider threats, compromised credentials, or lateral movement following an initial breach. The disruption caused by the DoS could affect sectors relying heavily on NAS devices for file storage and collaboration, including finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and public administration. Additionally, organizations with remote management enabled on QNAP devices are at higher risk due to the network-exploitable nature of the vulnerability. While the vulnerability does not directly lead to data breaches or integrity compromise, the availability impact can cause operational downtime, loss of productivity, and potential financial losses. Given the widespread use of QNAP devices in Europe, especially in small and medium enterprises, the vulnerability could have a notable impact if not promptly mitigated.

Mitigation Recommendations

European organizations should immediately verify the QTS version running on their QNAP devices and upgrade to QTS 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 or later, or the corresponding patched QuTS hero versions. Since the vulnerability requires administrator privileges, organizations should enforce strong authentication mechanisms, including multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all administrative accounts to reduce the risk of credential compromise. Network access to QNAP management interfaces should be restricted using firewalls, VPNs, or zero-trust network access solutions to limit exposure to untrusted networks. Regularly audit and monitor administrative account activity and system logs for signs of unauthorized access or suspicious behavior. Disable or limit remote administration features if not necessary. Implement network segmentation to isolate NAS devices from critical infrastructure and reduce lateral movement opportunities. Additionally, maintain up-to-date backups of critical data stored on QNAP devices to ensure business continuity in case of service disruption. Organizations should also stay informed about QNAP security advisories and apply patches promptly to mitigate emerging threats.
