Technical Analysis

TryGhost Ghost CMS versions >=4.22.0 and <6.65.0 improperly neutralize input during web page generation by storing SVG media thumbnails and SVG images uploaded with non-SVG file extensions without sanitization. This cross-site scripting (CWE-79) vulnerability enables any staff user, including Contributors, to host scripts on the site's domain, which may lead to compromise of other staff users' administrative sessions. The issue is resolved in version 6.65.0.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker with staff-level access, including Contributors, to inject malicious scripts that run in the context of the site's domain. This can lead to compromise of other staff users' admin sessions, resulting in unauthorized administrative actions. The vulnerability does not affect availability but impacts confidentiality and integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to TryGhost Ghost version 6.65.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation or workaround is indicated in the available data.
