Vendor/Project: TryGhost
Product: Ghost

Description

Ghost is a Node.js content management system. From 6.22.1 until 6.64.0, Ghost restricted the content type used to serve uploaded files to prevent browsers from executing them. On sites using the default local storage adapter, this restriction was not applied, so files uploaded by any staff user were served with a content type derived from their file extension. This could be used to host scripts on the site's domain, possibly resulting in compromise of other staff users' admin sessions. This issue is fixed in version 6.64.0.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-105679 is a cross-site scripting vulnerability in TryGhost Ghost CMS affecting versions >=6.22.1 and <6.64.0. The vulnerability arises because Ghost restricted content types for uploaded files to prevent browser execution, but this restriction was not applied when using the default local storage adapter. Consequently, files uploaded by staff users were served with content types derived from their file extensions, allowing malicious scripts to be hosted on the site domain. This could lead to compromise of other staff users' admin sessions. The vulnerability is addressed in Ghost version 6.64.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker with staff user privileges could upload files that browsers execute as scripts due to improper content type restrictions. This enables cross-site scripting attacks within the site domain, potentially compromising the admin sessions of other staff users. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.3 (high severity), indicating a significant impact on confidentiality and integrity but no impact on availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Ghost to version 6.64.0 or later, where the issue is fixed by applying proper content type restrictions to uploaded files even when using the default local storage adapter. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
