Technical Analysis

PayloadCMS, a headless content management system, suffers from a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34. Specifically, when querying a readable collection that has a relationship to another collection, information about related documents protected by access.read constraints can be exposed improperly. This vulnerability allows unauthorized information disclosure due to insufficient enforcement of access control on related documents. The vulnerability has been fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

Potential Impact

Unauthorized users can gain access to information about related documents that should be protected by access.read constraints, potentially leading to information disclosure. The vulnerability does not require privileges or user interaction and can be exploited remotely over the network. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.9 (medium severity), reflecting the network attack vector, low complexity, and lack of required privileges or user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to PayloadCMS version 3.90.0 or later, or to canary version 4.0.0-canary.34 or later, where this missing authorization vulnerability has been fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
