CVE-2026-105859: CWE-639: Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key in payloadcms payload
Description
Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, an attacker can submit a request to a specific update endpoint that modifies collection documents without enforcing collection or field-level access control when orderable is enabled on a collection or join field. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

Technical Analysis
PayloadCMS, a headless content management system, has an authorization bypass vulnerability (CWE-639) identified as CVE-2026-105859. In affected versions (<3.90.0 and >=4.0.0-canary.0 <4.0.0-canary.34), an attacker can submit requests to a particular update endpoint that modifies collection documents without enforcing the required collection or field-level access controls when the 'orderable' feature is enabled on collections or join fields. This allows unauthorized modification of data. The issue is resolved in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation results in complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of collection documents due to unauthorized modification capabilities. The CVSS v3.1 score is 9.8 (critical), reflecting network attack vector, no privileges required, no user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade PayloadCMS to version 3.90.0 or later, or to 4.0.0-canary.34 or later for canary releases. These versions contain the official fix that enforces collection and field-level access controls properly when the orderable feature is enabled. No other mitigations are indicated.
