CVE-2026-109229: Improper Handling of Highly Compressed Data (Data Amplification) in sgl-project sglang

High
Published: 10/12/2026 (10/12/2026, 15:32:19 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: sgl-project
Product: sglang

Description

SGLang versions up to 0.5.21 have a denial of service vulnerability caused by disabling Pillow's decompression bomb protection. This occurs because Image.MAX_IMAGE_PIXELS is set to None in NanoNemotronVLImageProcessor, allowing remote attackers to submit small, highly compressed images with very large dimensions. This can exhaust worker memory during image decoding, leading to denial of service.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-109229 is a denial of service vulnerability in SGLang through version 0.5.21. The vulnerability arises because the NanoNemotronVLImageProcessor disables Pillow's decompression bomb protection by setting Image.MAX_IMAGE_PIXELS to None process-wide. This allows remote attackers to submit small but highly compressed images with huge pixel dimensions to the generic image loader, which exhausts worker memory during decompression and causes a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

Remote attackers can cause denial of service by exhausting memory resources during image decompression. This impacts availability of the affected system or service running SGLang up to version 0.5.21. There is no indication of privilege escalation, data disclosure, or code execution from the provided data.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted images or implement external controls to limit image size and decompression resource usage.
