Published: 10/20/2026 (10/20/2026, 16:19:12 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: apostrophecms
Product: apostrophe

Description

ApostropheCMS versions prior to 4.34.0 and sanitize-html versions from 2.18.0 up to but not including 2.18.1 contain an uncontrolled recursion vulnerability. This occurs when an <iframe> tag is disallowed and the disallowedTagsMode is set to 'discard', causing recursive calls to sanitizeHtml with no bound. This can lead to denial of service due to resource exhaustion. The vulnerability has a medium severity score of 5.3 and is fixed in sanitize-html version 2.18.1.

Technical Analysis

In ApostropheCMS, specifically in sanitize-html version 2.18.0, when an <iframe> element is not allowed and the disallowedTagsMode option is set to 'discard' (the default), the raw-text content of the iframe is re-sanitized by a recursive call to sanitizeHtml(text, options). This recursion is uncontrolled and unbounded, starting each nested call with a fresh state, which can cause a denial of service condition. The issue is addressed by updating sanitize-html to version 2.18.1. The affected ApostropheCMS versions are those prior to 4.34.0 that use the vulnerable sanitize-html versions.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause a denial of service (DoS) by exhausting system resources due to uncontrolled recursion during HTML sanitization. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported. No known exploits are currently in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade sanitize-html to version 2.18.1 or later to apply the official fix. Also, upgrade ApostropheCMS to version 4.34.0 or later where this issue is resolved. No other mitigations are specified.
