AI-suggested
A fix is available in Snipe-IT version 8.6.3 and later. Users should upgrade to version 8.6.3 or newer to ensure that the ldap_start_tls() return value is properly checked and that LDAP binds are protected by TLS. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
Snipe-IT versions before 8.6.3 have a vulnerability where the software ignores the return value of ldap_start_tls() in the LDAP connection process. This allows an attacker positioned on the network path to force LDAP binds to occur in cleartext by responding with a protocol error to the StartTLS request. As a result, attackers can capture sensitive credentials including service-account credentials and end-user login passwords.
Impact
An attacker with network position between the client and LDAP server can force the transmission of LDAP credentials in cleartext, potentially capturing service-account credentials and user login passwords. This compromises the confidentiality of sensitive authentication information, which could lead to unauthorized access to the system or escalation of privileges.
Summary
CVE-2026-116200 affects grokability's Snipe-IT software versions prior to 8.6.3. The vulnerability arises because the function Ldap::connectToLdap() does not properly handle the return value of ldap_start_tls(), which initiates a TLS session for LDAP communication. An on-path attacker can exploit this by sending a protocol error in response to the StartTLS request, causing the client to fall back to cleartext LDAP binds. This enables the attacker to intercept sensitive authentication credentials transmitted in cleartext over the network.
