Technical Analysis

The JS Help Desk WordPress plugin prior to version 3.1.4 fails to verify that a user owns a support-ticket reply before permitting updates to it. This authorization bypass allows any authenticated user with at least Subscriber privileges to modify the content of any support-ticket reply on the affected site. The vulnerability is identified as CWE-863 and has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 4.3, indicating a medium severity impact primarily affecting integrity without impacting confidentiality or availability.

Potential Impact

An attacker with an authenticated account at Subscriber level or above can overwrite the content of any support-ticket reply, potentially misleading support staff or users by altering ticket information. This impacts data integrity but does not affect confidentiality or availability according to the CVSS vector.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation guidance is currently available. Users should monitor the vendor advisory for updates and apply the official fix once released. Until then, consider restricting user roles or permissions to limit who can authenticate and interact with support tickets.
