Description

CVE-2026-15816 is a high-severity OS command injection vulnerability in the dracut component of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The die() error-handling function improperly writes error messages into shell scripts without proper shell-quoting. If the message includes data from the DHCP ROOT_PATH option, a rogue DHCP server on the adjacent network can inject commands that execute as root during boot-failure handling. This affects systems using network boot with DHCP-supplied ROOT_PATH values. Exploitation requires an attacker-controlled DHCP server on the same network segment and a failure in dracut's netroot handler resolution. Systems not using network boot or DHCP ROOT_PATH are not vulnerable. Mitigation includes restricting DHCP server access on network boot segments until a fix is available.
