Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: GFI
Product: Archiver

Description

GFI Archiver MArc.Store Deserialization of Untrusted Data Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GFI Archiver. Although authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability, the existing authentication mechanism can be bypassed. The specific flaw exists within the configuration of the MArc.Store.Remoting.exe process. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in deserialization of untrusted data. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of SYSTEM. Was ZDI-CAN-27936.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-2036 is a critical vulnerability affecting GFI Archiver version 15.10, specifically in the MArc.Store.Remoting.exe process. The vulnerability stems from CWE-502: Deserialization of Untrusted Data, where the application fails to properly validate or sanitize serialized input before deserializing it. This flaw allows remote attackers to craft malicious serialized objects that, when processed by the vulnerable service, lead to arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability requires authentication; however, the authentication mechanism can be bypassed, effectively allowing unauthenticated attackers to exploit the flaw remotely. Successful exploitation results in code execution with SYSTEM-level privileges, granting full control over the affected system. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.0 base score of 8.8, reflecting its high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability, combined with low attack complexity and no user interaction required. Although no public exploits have been reported yet, the severity and nature of this vulnerability make it a prime target for attackers. The lack of available patches at the time of disclosure increases the urgency for organizations to implement compensating controls and monitor for exploitation attempts. This vulnerability was cataloged as ZDI-CAN-27936 by the Zero Day Initiative, indicating it was responsibly disclosed and analyzed by security researchers.

Potential Impact

The impact of CVE-2026-2036 is severe for organizations using GFI Archiver 15.10. Exploitation allows attackers to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges, potentially leading to full system compromise. This can result in unauthorized access to sensitive archived emails and documents, data theft, data manipulation, or destruction. The attacker could also use the compromised system as a foothold to move laterally within the network, escalate privileges, and deploy ransomware or other malware. The vulnerability affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected systems, posing risks to business continuity and regulatory compliance. Organizations in sectors such as finance, healthcare, government, and critical infrastructure that rely on GFI Archiver for email archiving and compliance are particularly at risk. The ability to bypass authentication further exacerbates the threat, increasing the likelihood of exploitation even in environments with access controls. The absence of known exploits in the wild currently offers a window for proactive defense, but the high severity score and ease of exploitation demand immediate attention.

Mitigation Recommendations

To mitigate CVE-2026-2036, organizations should first verify if they are running GFI Archiver version 15.10 and assess exposure of the MArc.Store.Remoting.exe service, especially on internet-facing or untrusted networks. Until an official patch is released, apply the following specific mitigations: 1) Restrict network access to the vulnerable service using firewalls or network segmentation to limit exposure to trusted administrators only. 2) Implement strict access controls and monitor authentication logs for suspicious bypass attempts or unusual access patterns. 3) Employ application-layer firewalls or intrusion prevention systems (IPS) with custom rules to detect and block suspicious serialized payloads targeting the deserialization process. 4) Conduct regular integrity checks and monitoring of the GFI Archiver environment to detect unauthorized changes or code execution attempts. 5) Engage with GFI support for any available hotfixes or recommended configuration changes that reduce attack surface. 6) Prepare incident response plans specific to this vulnerability, including containment and recovery procedures. 7) Educate administrators about the risks of deserialization vulnerabilities and the importance of timely patching once updates become available. These targeted actions go beyond generic advice by focusing on controlling access to the vulnerable component and detecting exploitation attempts.
