Source: CVE Database V5

Description

CVE-2026-29643 is a vulnerability in the XiangShan open-source high-performance RISC-V processor's CSR subsystem. It involves improper handling of exceptional conditions when certain CSR operations target non-existent or custom CSR addresses. This flaw can cause the processor to fail to transfer control to the trap handler, potentially leading to a hung or unrecoverable state. A local attacker with code execution capability on the processor can exploit this to cause denial of service and possibly inconsistent architectural state. No patch or official remediation guidance is currently available.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in XiangShan's CSR subsystem arises from improper exceptional-condition handling in commit edb1dfaf7d290ae99724594507dc46c2c2125384. When sequences of CSR operations target invalid CSR addresses, the processor may trigger an illegal-instruction exception but fail to reliably transfer control to the mtvec trap handler. This control-flow disruption can leave the core hung or in an unrecoverable state, enabling a local attacker to cause denial of service and potentially inconsistent processor state.

Potential Impact

Exploitation can cause denial of service by hanging or unrecoverably disrupting the processor's control flow. Additionally, it may lead to inconsistent architectural state, which could affect system stability or reliability. The attack requires local code execution on the affected processor.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, avoid executing untrusted code on the affected processor to mitigate risk.
