Published: Fri Apr 17 2026 (04/17/2026, 16:02:09 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: HKUDS
Product: OpenHarness

Description

CVE-2026-40516 is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in HKUDS OpenHarness versions before commit bd4df81. The flaw exists in the web_fetch and web_search tools, which do not properly validate target addresses. This allows attackers to manipulate parameters to access private, localhost, or other non-public HTTP services reachable from the victim host, potentially exposing sensitive internal resources.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in HKUDS OpenHarness (CVE-2026-40516) involves improper validation of target addresses in the web_fetch and web_search tools. Attackers can exploit this SSRF weakness to induce the agent session to send requests to internal network resources such as loopback interfaces, RFC1918 private IP ranges, link-local addresses, cloud metadata endpoints, or admin panels. This can lead to unauthorized reading of response bodies from these otherwise inaccessible services. The issue affects versions prior to commit bd4df81 and is classified under CWE-918. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 7.8, indicating high severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, but with high scope and low impact on confidentiality and integrity.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an unauthenticated attacker to read data from internal HTTP services that are normally inaccessible externally. This could expose sensitive information from local development services, cloud metadata endpoints, or administrative interfaces. The vulnerability does not require privileges or user interaction, increasing its risk. However, there are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or temporary mitigation has been published as of now. Until a patch is available, restrict access to the affected tools and carefully validate or sanitize input parameters to prevent SSRF. Monitor for updates from HKUDS regarding a fix.
