Vendor/Project: DataDog
Product: guarddog

Description

GuardDog is a CLI tool to identify malicious PyPI packages. From 1.0.0 to 2.9.0, the programmatic remote project scanning path rewrites attacker-controlled repository URLs using a blind string replacement and then sends the caller's GitHub credentials with the resulting request. This allows an attacker who can influence the scanned repository URL to trigger SSRF and capture the GH_TOKEN used by GuardDog. This vulnerability is fixed in .

Technical Analysis

GuardDog, a CLI tool by DataDog for identifying malicious PyPI packages, contains an SSRF vulnerability (CWE-918) in versions 1.0.0 to 2.9.0. The programmatic remote project scanning feature rewrites repository URLs controlled by an attacker via blind string replacement and sends GitHub credentials with the request. This behavior enables an attacker able to influence the repository URL to perform SSRF attacks and capture the GH_TOKEN used by GuardDog. The vulnerability is publicly known but no patch or official remediation level has been disclosed as of the published date.

Potential Impact

An attacker who can control the repository URL scanned by GuardDog can exploit this SSRF vulnerability to capture the GitHub token (GH_TOKEN) used by the tool. This token compromise could lead to unauthorized access to GitHub resources associated with the token. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 score of 8.2, indicating high impact on confidentiality with limited impact on integrity and no impact on availability. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no official fix or remediation level has been provided, users should avoid scanning untrusted or attacker-controlled repository URLs with GuardDog versions 1.0.0 through 2.9.0. Monitor DataDog's official channels for updates and apply any forthcoming patches promptly.
