Description

CVE-2026-54638 is a high severity vulnerability in gotd/td, a Telegram MTProto API client written in Go. Versions prior to 0.145.1 contain a flaw in proto.UnencryptedMessage.Decode where an attacker-controlled length value is used to allocate memory without verifying the buffer size first. This can lead to remote unauthenticated denial of service due to excessive memory allocation and increased CPU or garbage collection load. The issue is fixed in version 0.145.1.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability exists in the proto.UnencryptedMessage.Decode function of gotd/td before version 0.145.1. The function reads an attacker-controlled dataLen value from an unauthenticated MTProto unencrypted packet and allocates a byte slice of that length before checking if the buffer contains enough data. This unchecked allocation can cause excessive memory consumption and CPU or garbage collection pressure, enabling a remote unauthenticated denial of service attack. The flaw is addressed in version 0.145.1.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated remote attacker can cause denial of service by sending specially crafted MTProto unencrypted packets that trigger large memory allocations and CPU or garbage collection overhead. This impacts availability but does not affect confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to gotd/td version 0.145.1 or later, where the vulnerability is fixed. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor stating the issue is resolved in 0.145.1.
