Published: 09/08/2026 (09/08/2026, 21:28:06 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: n8n-io
Product: n8n

Description

n8n versions prior to 2.37.7 and 2.38.2 contain a missing authorization vulnerability in the /chat WebSocket route. Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in n8n (CVE-2026-86077) arises from missing authorization checks in the /chat WebSocket route. Specifically, the resumeToken used to resume paused executions was accepted without verifying that the target node supports chat messages. This allowed an anonymous attacker with access to a resumeToken to reuse it to resume executions involving Send-and-Wait, non-chat HITL, or Wait approval gates improperly. The affected code is located in packages/cli/src/chat/chat-execution-manager.ts, where the canResumeOverChat function failed to gate the resume target. The issue is resolved in n8n versions 2.37.7 and 2.38.2.

Potential Impact

An attacker who obtains a resumeToken can bypass authorization controls to resume paused workflow executions that should not be resumable via the chat interface. This could lead to unintended workflow progress or actions without proper authorization. The vulnerability has a CVSS 4.0 score of 6.3 (medium severity), indicating a moderate risk with network attack vector, low complexity, and no privileges required.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in n8n versions 2.37.7 and 2.38.2. Users should upgrade to at least these versions to remediate the issue. No official patch links were provided, but upgrading to the fixed versions is the recommended action. Since this is not a cloud service, users must apply the update themselves.
