AI-suggested

Red Hat currently does not provide a patch or mitigation that meets their criteria for ease of use, deployment, applicability, or stability. Since exploitation requires local user interaction or automated processing of untrusted filesystem images, users should avoid opening or processing untrusted FAT32 filesystem images with parted. Monitoring Red Hat's advisory page for future updates or fixes is recommended.

Description

CVE-2026-89085 is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the parted utility on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. It arises from an integer calculation error during buffer allocation when processing a specially crafted FAT32 filesystem image. A local attacker could exploit this by tricking a user or automated service into opening a malicious filesystem image, potentially causing an application crash resulting in denial of service or memory corruption. The vulnerability requires local user interaction and is rated as moderate impact due to its limited attack vector and scope.
