Description

vm2 NodeVM versions prior to 3.12.1 have a critical sandbox escape vulnerability. The vulnerability arises because the denylist of dangerous built-in modules omits child_process, allowing attackers to require this module and execute arbitrary commands on the host system when NodeVM is configured with builtin:['*'] or explicitly allows child_process.

Technical Analysis

The vm2 NodeVM sandbox before version 3.12.1 contains a sandbox escape vulnerability due to an incomplete denylist of dangerous built-in modules. Specifically, the child_process module is not blocked, enabling attackers to require it and execute arbitrary commands on the host system if NodeVM is configured with builtin:['*'] or explicitly permits child_process. This vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 10.0, indicating critical severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. A patch is available in version 3.12.1.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to escape the NodeVM sandbox and execute arbitrary commands on the host system, leading to full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade vm2 to version 3.12.1 or later where this vulnerability is patched. Avoid configuring NodeVM with builtin:['*'] or explicitly allowing child_process until patched.
