Flowise has an Arbitrary File Read

Critical
Published: 09/15/2025 (09/15/2025, 20:00:39 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: flowise

Description

Flowise versions 3.0.5 up to but not including 3.0.6 contain an arbitrary file read vulnerability in the chatId parameter of two API endpoints. This flaw allows unauthenticated users with knowledge of a valid chatflowId UUID to read arbitrary files on the local filesystem, including the default SQLite database file. The vulnerability arises from insufficient validation of the chatId parameter combined with fallback logic that bypasses directory restrictions. Exploitation can lead to disclosure of sensitive data such as API keys stored in the database and causes denial of service by corrupting file access until server restart.

Technical Analysis

An arbitrary file read vulnerability exists in Flowise 3.0.5 (fixed in 3.0.6) affecting the /api/v1/get-upload-file and /api/v1/openai-assistants-file/download endpoints. The chatId parameter is not properly validated, allowing path traversal when fallback logic removes the orgId directory from the file path. This enables reading files outside the intended storage directory, notably the local SQLite database file containing sensitive application data including API keys. The fallback mechanism also moves files, causing permanent file access issues until the server is restarted. Access requires a valid chatflowId UUID, which is unguessable but can be obtained via other API endpoints.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary files on the server's local filesystem within the Flowise storage directory and one level above it. This includes the SQLite database file containing all application data and API keys, potentially leading to full administrative compromise. Additionally, the fallback file move operation causes denial of service by preventing further file read/write operations until manual intervention and server restart.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Flowise version 3.0.6. Users should upgrade to 3.0.6 or later to remediate this vulnerability. Until patched, restrict access to the affected endpoints and ensure that only trusted users can supply chatflowId values. Monitor for unusual file access patterns related to these endpoints. Patch status is confirmed by the version range indicating the vulnerability is fixed starting from 3.0.6.
