AI-suggested

A fix is available in GitPython version 2.16.0_9. Users should upgrade to this version or later to mitigate the vulnerability. The patch addresses the incomplete validation by properly sanitizing the section and option parameters to prevent newline injection. Until upgrading, avoid using untrusted input for the section parameter in config_writer().

Description

A vulnerability in GitPython allows newline injection in the section parameter of the config_writer() set_value() method. This bypasses the patch for CVE-2026-42215, which only validated newlines in the value parameter. An attacker controlling the section argument can inject newline characters to create arbitrary section headers in the .git/config file, including a malicious [core] section with hooksPath pointing to an attacker-controlled directory. This leads to remote code execution (RCE) when a git hook is triggered.
