Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pinctrl: pinconf-generic: Fully validate 'pinmux' property The pinconf_generic_parse_dt_pinmux() assumes that the 'pinmux' property is not empty when present. This might be not true. With that, the allocator will give a special value in return and not NULL which lead to the crash when trying to access that (invalid) memory. Fix that by fully validating 'pinmux' value, including its length.

Technical Analysis

The Linux kernel vulnerability CVE-2026-53307 arises from the pinctrl subsystem's pinconf_generic_parse_dt_pinmux() function, which does not fully validate the 'pinmux' property in device tree data. When the 'pinmux' property is present but empty, the allocator returns a special non-NULL value that leads to a crash when the kernel attempts to access invalid memory. This is a null-pointer dereference or use-after-free type issue categorized under CWE-476. The vulnerability impacts availability by causing kernel crashes. The fix involves adding complete validation of the 'pinmux' property's presence and length to prevent invalid memory access.

Potential Impact

This vulnerability can cause a denial of service by crashing the Linux kernel due to invalid memory access when parsing device tree 'pinmux' properties. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The CVSS vector indicates local attack vector, low complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, no confidentiality or integrity impact, and high impact on availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. The vulnerability description indicates that a fix has been implemented in the Linux kernel by fully validating the 'pinmux' property, including its length. Users should monitor official Linux kernel advisories and update to a fixed kernel version once available.
