AI-suggested

Upgrade kaniko to version 1.25.20 or later, which includes a patched ACR credential helper that strictly validates registry hostnames and prevents token leakage. If upgrading is not possible, remove all Azure identity credentials and block access to the Azure Instance Metadata Service from build environments to prevent token exposure. Setting the environment variable AZURE_ENVIRONMENT=none disables the helper's token requests. Avoid using the 'acr-env' credsStore setting or replace it with per-host credHelpers entries for trusted registries. Treat any tokens issued during vulnerable builds as compromised and review Azure logs for suspicious activity.

Description

kaniko versions before 1.25.20 contain a vulnerability in the Azure Container Registry (ACR) credential helper that can cause it to send Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) access tokens to attacker-controlled lookalike registry hosts. This occurs when a Dockerfile references images from a hostname containing '.azurecr.io' or similar domains, allowing an attacker to receive live Azure Resource Manager tokens. The vulnerability is fixed in kaniko v1.25.20 by tightening hostname validation in the credential helper.
