Description

Next.js applications using the App Router with at least one Server Action running in the Edge runtime are vulnerable to excessive memory consumption due to unbounded Server Action payloads. This can lead to resource exhaustion if large request bodies are processed. The vulnerability affects Next.js versions from 13.0.0 up to but not including 15.5.21, and from 16.0.0 up to but not including 16.2.11. No official patch is currently available. A recommended workaround is to limit the request body size to a maximum of 5 MiB at the hosting provider level.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-64646 is a vulnerability in Next.js applications that use the App Router with Server Actions executed in the Edge runtime. Requests with large payloads targeting these Server Actions can cause excessive memory consumption, potentially leading to denial of service conditions. The issue arises because the Server Action payload size is unbounded in this context. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling). Affected versions include >=13.0.0 <15.5.21 and >=16.0.0 <16.2.11. There is no official patch available at this time.

Potential Impact

Excessive memory consumption can degrade application performance or cause denial of service by exhausting server resources when processing large Server Action payloads in the Edge runtime. This may impact availability of Next.js applications using the affected versions and configurations.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently available. As a workaround, hosting providers should enforce a maximum request body size limit of 5 MiB to prevent excessive memory usage. Upgrading to a fixed version when available is recommended once a patch is released.
