Red Hat recommends upgrading to a fixed version once available. Until then, cautious handling of untrusted tar archives is advised to reduce risk.
Description
A vulnerability exists in the Python tarfile.extractall() function used in Red Hat AI Base Images 3.4.4 (TPU). This flaw allows a specially crafted archive to bypass security filters by using a hardlink referencing a symlink, enabling files to be extracted outside the intended directory. This can lead to unauthorized file reads or writes, potentially causing information disclosure or arbitrary file modification. The issue affects the CPython standard-library tarfile module shipped in Red Hat python3 packages, but not other similarly named packages or implementations.
