AI-suggested

A fix is available in environment-modules version 5.6.2-1.hum1. Users should update to this version to remediate the vulnerability. If you cannot patch yet, mitigation includes disabling Bash completion for the module and ml commands in environments where untrusted users can influence MODULEPATH. This can be done by commenting out the sourcing of the affected completion script in shell configuration files (e.g., ~/.bashrc or /etc/profile.d/) and starting a new shell session. Additionally, ensure that shared module search paths do not include directories writable by untrusted users.

Description

A vulnerability in the environment-modules package allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary commands by placing maliciously named modulefiles in a location visible to the victim's MODULEPATH. When the victim uses Bash completion for module or ml commands, the malicious module name is evaluated as a command, leading to potential arbitrary code execution. Exploitation requires user interaction and the ability to influence MODULEPATH, limiting broad exploitability. The issue impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. A fix is available in environment-modules version 5.6.2-1.hum1.
