Red Hat has released an official security update for rpm-ostree that addresses this vulnerability. Users of affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 variants should apply the update as detailed in the Red Hat advisory (RHSA-2025:7147) and the linked update instructions. No additional mitigation steps are indicated or required beyond applying the official patch.
Description
A use-after-free vulnerability (CVE-2025-24898) was identified in the rust-openssl component used by the rpm-ostree tool in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. This flaw involves the ssl::select_next_proto function and could potentially lead to memory corruption. Red Hat has issued a security update to address this moderate severity issue in rpm-ostree, which manages RPM packaging combined with OSTree bootable file system trees.
