AI-suggested
A patch is available in Tornado version 2.7.1_4 that fixes the vulnerability by using os.path.realpath() to resolve symlinks during path validation. Users should upgrade to version 2.7.1_4 or later. Until patched, avoid placing symlinks inside the static directory that point outside it, and ensure uploaded files do not include symlinks. No other mitigations are specified by the vendor.
Description
Tornado's StaticFileHandler in versions >=2.7.1 and <2.7.1_4 allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary files on the server by exploiting symbolic links within the static root directory. The vulnerability arises because path validation uses os.path.abspath(), which does not resolve symlinks, allowing traversal outside the static root. An attacker can access sensitive files such as configuration files, private keys, or system files if symlinks point outside the intended directory.
