Trend Research analyzed the latest version of LockBit ransomware, LockBit 5.0, which exhibits advanced obfuscation, anti-analysis techniques, and cross-platform capabilities for Windows, Linux, and ESXi systems. The Windows variant uses heavy obfuscation and packing, loading its payload through DLL reflection and implementing anti-analysis techniques. The Linux variant has similar functionality with command-line options for targeting specific directories and file types. The ESXi variant specifically targets VMware virtualization infrastructure. All variants use randomized 16-character file extensions, have Russian language system avoidance, and clear event logs post-encryption. The existence of multiple variants confirms LockBit's continued cross-platform strategy, enabling simultaneous attacks across entire enterprise networks including virtualized environments.
Olymp Loader is a recently emerged Malware-as-a-Service offering advertised on underground forums since June 2025. Developed by a team called OLYMPO, it's written in assembly language and marketed as fully undetectable. The loader executes other malware on victim systems and provides built-in stealer modules for browsers, Telegram, and crypto wallets. It enables rapid feature updates and fast adoption by cybercriminals. The malware has evolved from an initial botnet concept to focus on loader and crypter functionalities. Distribution methods include disguising as legitimate software and using other malware like Amadey as initial access. Post-infection payloads primarily include credential stealers and remote access tools.

A phishing campaign targeting Ukrainian government entities uses malicious SVG files to initiate an infection chain. The attack begins with emails containing SVG attachments that redirect victims to a download site. A CHM file is then used to execute a remote HTA loader, which delivers two malware payloads: Amatera Stealer and PureMiner. Amatera Stealer harvests extensive information from infected systems, including credentials, system data, application data, browser files, and cryptocurrency wallets. PureMiner collects hardware information and monitors system activity to deploy efficient CPU or GPU mining modules. The campaign demonstrates sophisticated techniques, including fileless malware delivery and the use of multiple stages to evade detection.

This analysis focuses on a new variant of Lumma Stealer, a malware that reemerged after a brief hiatus following a law enforcement operation. The article details the malware's code obfuscation, evasion techniques, and persistence mechanisms. It describes Netskope's machine learning-based detection approach, which utilizes a Cloud Sandbox enhanced with ML models to analyze runtime behavior, process trees, and other features. The specific sample analyzed is an NSIS installer file that abuses AutoIt for malicious purposes. The malware employs various anti-analysis techniques and establishes persistence through the Windows Startup folder. Netskope's multi-layered threat protection system successfully detected this Lumma Stealer variant.
A new campaign targeting telecommunications and manufacturing sectors in Central and South Asian countries has been discovered, delivering a new variant of PlugX. The campaign, active since 2022, shows overlaps between RainyDay and Turian backdoors, including the abuse of legitimate applications for DLL sideloading and shared encryption methods. The new PlugX variant's configuration format resembles that of RainyDay, suggesting attribution to Naikon. Analysis of victimology and technical implementation indicates a potential connection between Naikon and BackdoorDiplomacy, possibly sourcing tools from the same vendor. The malware families use similar infection chains, loaders, and shellcode structures, with shared RC4 keys for payload decryption. This campaign highlights the evolving tactics of Chinese-speaking threat actors and the potential collaboration between previously distinct groups.
