The CyberVolk ransomware, emerging in May 2024, targets public institutions and key infrastructures of anti-Russian countries. It uses a double encryption structure with AES-256 GCM and ChaCha20-Poly1305 algorithms. The ransomware excludes certain files and directories from encryption and uses a symmetric key generated before the main function starts. A unique nonce is generated for each file encryption, but it's not stored, making decryption impossible. The ransomware includes a disguised decryption logic that fails due to an incorrect nonce value. This pro-Russian group communicates via Telegram and has claimed attacks on major facilities in Japan, France, and the UK.

Bitdefender Labs has uncovered a new threat actor group named Curly COMrades, operating since mid-2024 to support Russian interests. The group targets critical organizations in countries experiencing geopolitical shifts, focusing on judicial and government bodies in Georgia and an energy distribution company in Moldova. Their primary objective is to maintain long-term network access and steal credentials. The attackers use proxy tools like Resocks, SSH, and Stunnel to establish multiple entry points, and deploy a new backdoor called MucorAgent. They also utilize compromised legitimate websites as traffic relays to complicate detection. The group's tactics include credential theft, lateral movement, and data exfiltration, employing both custom and open-source tools.

A Pakistan-linked APT group, Transparent Tribe (APT36), is targeting Indian Government and Defense personnel using 'Pahalgam Terror Attack' themed documents. The campaign involves credential phishing and deployment of malicious payloads, with fake domains impersonating Jammu & Kashmir Police and Indian Air Force. The phishing PDF documents contain embedded links leading to fake login pages. A PowerPoint add-on file with malicious macros has been identified, which drops the Crimson RAT payload. The campaign exploits sensitive geopolitical issues to maximize impact and extract intelligence. Multiple phishing domains were created shortly after the attack, impersonating various Indian government entities. The potential impact includes disruption of sensitive operations, information manipulation, and data breaches.
