Midnight Mimosa is a widespread Android malware campaign involving malicious applications preinstalled in the firmware of low-cost MediaTek-based devices. It affects over 150 countries, with highest concentrations in Mexico, France, and Italy. The malware leverages platform-signed system apps to silently deploy payloads, evade security protections, and execute remotely supplied code. It monetizes compromised devices through advertising fraud and residential-proxy services. The malicious firmware components provide persistent system-level access before device activation and bypass conventional Android security controls by temporarily disabling Google Play Store protections. Affected devices include low-cost Android handsets, counterfeit flagship models, and devices from Doogee and Cubot.
A sophisticated malware campaign named Midnight Mimosa targets low-cost Android devices using MediaTek platforms by preinstalling malicious code in device firmware before user acquisition. The malware operates as a platform-signed system application with elevated privileges, allowing silent installation of apps, permission grants, and remote code execution. It primarily facilitates ad fraud, click fraud, device data collection, and converts infected devices into residential-proxy botnet nodes. The malicious app disguises itself under system-like names and disables Google Play Store during payload deployment to evade detection. Several related malicious apps were also found on Google Play, linked to the same command-and-control infrastructure.
An Android proxyware SDK named Popa enrolls consumer devices including phones, tablets, and streaming boxes into a commercial residential proxy network. Operating since at least 2020, Popa and its variants (Loopop, Neupop, and Moneytiser) are distributed inside consumer streaming, IPTV, and utility applications. The SDK begins relaying third-party traffic at host-app launch without displaying informed-consent prompts in analyzed samples. Multiple variants communicate directly with NetNut SDK endpoints, sharing operational infrastructure and telemetry. Controlled testing showed traffic from Popa-enrolled devices egressing through NetNut's commercial gateway. The SDK uses encrypted Google Drive files to resolve relay servers in later versions. Analysis of over 20 publishers revealed significant links to piracy-related applications, with none observed requesting user consent despite later builds including this capability.
Mirax is a newly identified Android Remote Access Trojan operating as Malware-as-a-Service, actively targeting European users, particularly in Spanish-speaking regions. Distributed through Meta advertisements and GitHub-hosted droppers, the malware has reached over 200,000 accounts. It employs sophisticated techniques including dynamically fetched HTML overlays, comprehensive keylogging, and remote device control capabilities. A distinctive feature is its integration of SOCKS5-based residential proxy functionality, transforming infected devices into proxy nodes that enable attackers to route traffic through legitimate residential IP addresses. This capability allows operators to bypass geolocation restrictions and evade fraud detection systems while conducting account takeovers and transaction fraud. The malware uses commercial-grade obfuscation through Golden Encryption and establishes persistence through Accessibility Service abuse.
GhostSocks is an emerging threat that turns compromised devices into residential proxy nodes, enabling attackers to evade detection. Originally marketed on Russian underground forums as Malware-as-a-Service, it has gained popularity due to its partnership with Lumma Stealer. Written in GoLang, GhostSocks uses SOCKS5 proxy protocol and TLS encryption to blend malicious traffic into normal network activity. It also incorporates backdoor functionality for running arbitrary commands and deploying additional payloads. Darktrace observed an increase in GhostSocks activity, detecting it alongside Lumma Stealer in customer networks. The malware's versatility in converting devices into proxy nodes while enabling covert network access illustrates how threat actors maximize the value of compromised infrastructure.
A convincing lookalike of the popular 7-Zip archiver site has been serving a trojanized installer that silently converts victims' machines into residential proxy nodes. The fake site, 7zip[.]com, distributes a functional copy of 7-Zip alongside concealed malware. The malware deploys three components: Uphero.exe (service manager), hero.exe (proxy payload), and hero.dll (supporting library). It establishes persistence through Windows services, manipulates firewall rules, and profiles the host system. The primary function is to enroll infected hosts as residential proxy nodes, allowing third parties to route traffic through victims' IP addresses. This campaign appears to be part of a broader operation with similar tactics used for other fake installers. The malware incorporates multiple evasion techniques and uses encrypted communications.
GhostSocks is a Malware-as-a-Service (MAAS) that converts compromised devices into residential proxies, enabling threat actors to bypass anti-fraud mechanisms. Introduced in October 2023, it gained popularity after partnering with LummaStealer in February 2024. The malware, coded in Golang, uses obfuscation techniques and can be built as a 32-bit DLL or executable. It doesn't implement persistence mechanisms but focuses on SOCKS5 functionality. GhostSocks uses a configuration file or hardcoded config to connect to C2 servers, randomly generates credentials, and establishes a SOCKS5 connection using open-source libraries. Despite law enforcement actions against related platforms, GhostSocks continues to operate, posing ongoing risks of double victimization and long-term network access for cybercriminals.
A global malware infection of Windows computers has been uncovered, stemming from software users installed themselves. The malware, disguised as legitimate PDF editors and manual finders, turns infected systems into residential proxies for malicious actors. The infection chain starts with deceptive ads posing as PDF manuals. The campaign, which appears to have ceased, was widespread due to large-scale advertising. The malware creates scheduled tasks, executes JavaScript files, and communicates with various C2 domains. It's potentially linked to the OneStart Browser, known for spreading spyware and adware. Authorities advise blocking access to related domains, checking for specific applications, and removing software signed by certain certificate issuers.
DSLRoot, a residential proxy provider, operates a network of hardware devices deployed in U.S.homes across at least 20 states. The network is managed by a Belarusian national with ties to both Minsk and Moscow. Unlike typical proxy services, DSLRoot uses dedicated hardware in American residences, creating persistent access to U.S.home networks. The company's custom software enables remote management of consumer modems and Android devices, allowing for IP address rotation and connectivity control. The network operates without authentication, permitting anonymous traffic routing through U.S.residential IPs. The operator also runs related services, including virtual credit card issuance and company formation, targeting both English and Russian-speaking markets. The discovery raises concerns about foreign-controlled infrastructure in sensitive locations, including military homes.
HUMAN's Satori team uncovered and partially disrupted BADBOX 2.0, a complex fraud operation targeting over 1 million low-cost consumer devices worldwide. The scheme involves a backdoor pre-installed on devices or distributed through unofficial app marketplaces, allowing threat actors to conduct various fraudulent activities. These include selling residential proxy services, ad fraud through hidden ads and WebViews, and click fraud. Four main threat actor groups were identified: SalesTracker, MoYu, Lemon, and LongTV. The operation affects Android Open Source Project devices in 222 countries, with Brazil being the most impacted. Disruption efforts involved collaboration with Google and other partners to mitigate the threat's impact.
The Mimo intrusion set is exploiting CVE-2024-46483, a Remote Code Execution vulnerability in Craft CMS, to deploy webshells and execute malicious payloads. The attack chain includes downloading infection scripts and deploying a loader, cryptominer (XMRig), and residential proxyware (IPRoyal) for financial gain. The group uses unique identifiers such as '4l4md4r' and 'n1tr0' and has been linked to operators 'EtxArny' and 'N1tr0'. Detection can focus on unusual processes in temporary directories and kernel module changes. The campaign targets Craft CMS installations globally, with a focus on financially motivated exploitation rather than geopolitical objectives. The threat is medium severity due to the impact on confidentiality and availability, ease of exploitation via RCE, and the scope of affected web servers. Organizations using Craft CMS should prioritize patching and monitoring for indicators of compromise.
