An intrusion was investigated that began with exploitation of CVE-2026-48558, a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in SimpleHelp RMM software. The threat actor obtained unauthorized technician access and deployed two previously undocumented malware samples: TaskWeaver and Djinn Stealer. TaskWeaver is a heavily obfuscated Node.js loader that establishes encrypted communications and delivers additional payloads. Djinn Stealer targets credentials across Windows, macOS, and Linux systems, collecting authentication data for cloud platforms, source control, package registries, AI development assistants, browsers, SSH keys, and cryptocurrency wallets. The attacker leveraged legitimate RMM capabilities to transfer files and execute commands across managed systems. Stolen AI assistant tokens provided extensive access to repositories, databases, and cloud accounts. The intrusion demonstrated how a single authentication bypass in trusted management infrastructure can enable widespread credential theft and p...

A sophisticated phishing campaign leverages DocuSign-themed lures to trick victims into installing legitimate remote management software including MeshAgent, ScreenConnect, and SimpleHelp. The operation employs a reusable web kit featuring staged delivery through simulated document loading interfaces, user-agent based targeting that filters for Windows systems while blocking Edge browsers, and Cloudflare Turnstile verification. The campaign demonstrates operational maturity with separate Windows and macOS delivery paths, real-time victim telemetry via Telegram, and VBS deployment scripts that disable Windows Defender and establish persistence through service installation. Active from May through July 2026, the infrastructure rotates across multiple domains using consistent URL patterns to evade detection while abusing trusted IT tools for persistent access.

During tax season, threat actors exploit the urgency of time-sensitive tax-related emails to trick targets into opening malicious attachments, scanning QR codes, or following link chains. Recent campaigns identified by Microsoft Threat Intelligence use lures around W-2 forms, tax forms, and impersonation of government tax agencies and financial institutions. These campaigns aim to harvest credentials or deliver malware, often using phishing-as-a-service platforms for convincing credential theft and MFA bypass. Notable tactics include using legitimate remote monitoring tools, targeting specific industries and roles like accountants, and employing sophisticated social engineering techniques. The campaigns leverage various file formats, legitimate infrastructure, and multiple user interactions to complicate detection.

Threat actors have been observed exploiting Net Monitor for Employees Professional and SimpleHelp software in ransomware operations. These legitimate tools were used for remote access, command execution, and persistence. The attackers disguised Net Monitor as Microsoft OneDrive and configured SimpleHelp with cryptocurrency-related keyword triggers. In one case, the attack led to an attempted deployment of Crazy ransomware. The intrusions involved initial access through compromised VPN accounts, followed by the installation of these tools for remote control and monitoring. The shared infrastructure and tactics suggest a single threat actor or group behind these activities, with objectives including cryptocurrency theft and ransomware deployment.

A North Korea-linked threat actor known as KONNI has been observed conducting a phishing campaign targeting software developers and engineering teams, particularly those with blockchain expertise. The campaign uses AI-generated PowerShell backdoors and targets a broader range of countries in the APAC region. The infection chain begins with a Discord-hosted link downloading a ZIP archive containing a PDF lure and a malicious LNK file. The LNK file deploys additional components, including the AI-generated PowerShell backdoor. The backdoor employs various anti-analysis techniques and establishes persistence through scheduled tasks. This campaign demonstrates KONNI's evolution in tactics and tooling, including the adoption of AI-assisted malware development.

Threat actors are increasingly abusing legitimate Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) tools such as PDQ and GoTo Resolve to deploy secondary RMM tools like ScreenConnect or SimpleHelp, enabling persistent and stealthy access. Attacks often start with phishing emails or malicious downloads, targeting diverse sectors including real estate, investment firms, and car dealerships. Social engineering lures include holiday-themed messages and fake bid transcripts to trick users into executing malicious payloads. The abuse of multiple RMM tools complicates detection and remediation efforts. Detection and mitigation require a managed Security Operations Center (SOC) with visibility into RMM tool usage and network behavior. The threat is medium severity due to the potential for persistence and lateral movement, but exploitation requires initial user interaction. European organizations using these RMM tools are at risk, especially those in Germany and countries with high adoption of these management platforms. Practical mitigations include strict RMM access controls, multi-factor authentication, monitoring for unusual RMM deployments, and user training against phishing. No known exploits in the wild have been reported yet, but the trend indicates growing attacker interest in RMM abuse for persistence and lateral movement.

Cybercriminals are targeting trucking and logistics companies to steal cargo freight through elaborate attack chains. They compromise companies and use their access to bid on cargo shipments, which they then steal and sell. The threat actors typically deliver remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools as a first-stage payload. This cyber-enabled theft is part of a multi-million-dollar criminal enterprise that has increased due to digital transformation. The attackers use tactics such as compromising load boards, email thread hijacking, and direct targeting via email campaigns. They deliver RMM tools like ScreenConnect, SimpleHelp, and PDQ Connect, which grant full control of compromised machines. The activity has been observed since at least June 2025, with nearly two dozen campaigns in the last two months alone.
