In May 2026, a sophisticated Monero cryptomining campaign was identified targeting Linux environments. Attackers gained initial access through trusted third-party relationships, then escalated to root privileges. Rather than operating openly as root, they weaponized Linux Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) to impersonate multiple low-privileged users, creating a forensic smokescreen and establishing redundant persistence through cronjobs. The operators suppressed system logging and deployed a customized XMRig 6.25.0 implant that self-unlinks after execution, running entirely in memory. The binary uses XOR encryption for configuration obfuscation and employs process masquerading to blend with legitimate processes. Campaign tracking revealed operations linked to the V25 Generation 26 family, connecting to the domain unable.download for mining pool communication.

A malicious release of the jscrambler npm package (version 8.14.0) was published on July 11, 2026, introducing hidden native binaries that execute automatically during installation. The compromised package added an undocumented preinstall hook executing dist/setup.js, which deploys platform-specific binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows embedded in an obfuscated CSI container. The payload is a Rust-built infostealer targeting cryptocurrency wallets, AI coding assistants, cloud credentials (AWS, GCP, Azure), browser data, and messaging applications. String obfuscation uses per-string ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption. The threat actor published five malicious versions (8.14.0, 8.16.0, 8.17.0, 8.18.0, 8.20.0) over three hours, evolving delivery methods to evade detection. Version 8.22.0 is confirmed clean. The package receives approximately 15,800 weekly downloads, affecting developer workstations, CI systems, and build pipelines with access to credentials and secrets.

Chinese threat actor VerdantBamboo compromised a victim organization and its Managed Services Provider over an 18-month period, deploying malware on network edge devices lacking EDR coverage. The initial breach involved an Egnyte Storage Sync system, where attackers exploited a sudo misconfiguration for privilege escalation and installed BRICKSTORM backdoor and AGENTPSD fallback implant. Investigation revealed the MSP's pfSense firewall was also compromised with a FreeBSD variant of BRICKSTORM. After remediation, VerdantBamboo regained access through stolen firewall credentials, enabling custom VPN access and deploying PLENET backdoor on a Synology NAS. The threat actor leveraged compromised systems as proxies to access Microsoft 365 environments while evading security controls. VerdantBamboo demonstrated operational discipline by targeting appliances without EDR capabilities and using sophisticated malware including PLENET, compiled with .NET Native AOT to hinder analysis.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence discovered a large-scale npm supply chain attack compromising 32 malicious packages across over 90 versions under the @redhat-cloud-services scope. The compromise originated from the RedHatInsights/javascript-clients CI/CD pipeline, enabling attackers to publish trojanized packages through legitimate GitHub Actions OIDC workflows with authentic provenance signatures. The malicious packages executed a heavily obfuscated 4.29 MB dropper via npm preinstall hooks, which downloaded the Bun JavaScript runtime and launched payloads designed to harvest credentials from GitHub, npm, AWS, Azure, GCP, HashiCorp Vault, Kubernetes, and developer systems. The malware scraped GitHub Actions runner memory for secrets, escalated privileges using passwordless sudo, exfiltrated stolen data through GitHub infrastructure, and propagated by compromising additional maintainer packages with forged SLSA provenance. The campaign marker "Miasma: The Spreading Blight" was embedded throughout the malicious

Microsoft identified an active supply chain attack targeting the @antv npm package ecosystem. A threat actor compromised an @antv maintainer account and published malicious versions of widely used data-visualization packages, affecting libraries like echarts-for-react with over 1 million weekly downloads. The attack propagates through dependency chains into CI/CD pipelines and cloud workloads. A 499 KB obfuscated JavaScript payload executes silently during npm install, specifically designed to steal credentials from GitHub Actions environments. Key capabilities include multi-platform credential theft (GitHub, AWS, HashiCorp Vault, npm, Kubernetes, 1Password), GitHub Action Runner process memory scraping, privilege escalation, dual-channel data exfiltration, and SLSA provenance forgery. The payload targets CI/CD environments deliberately, with over 2,200 compromised repositories observed. GitHub responded by removing 640 malicious packages and invalidating 61,274 npm tokens.

Lazarus Group is conducting an active campaign targeting businesses through ClickFix attacks, distributing a newly identified macOS malware kit called "Mach-O Man". The attack begins with fake meeting invitations via Telegram, redirecting victims to fraudulent collaboration platforms impersonating Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet. Victims are tricked into executing terminal commands that install the malware. The kit consists of Go-based Mach-O binaries including a stager, profiler, persistence mechanism, and stealer. The malware collects credentials, browser data, and macOS Keychain entries, exfiltrating data through Telegram. Primary targets include fintech, crypto, and high-value environments where macOS is prevalent. The campaign leverages social engineering and native macOS binaries to evade traditional EDR detection, ultimately enabling account takeover, unauthorized infrastructure access, and financial loss.

A new payload in the TeamPCP arsenal has been discovered, capable of wiping entire Kubernetes clusters. The script uses the same ICP canister as the CanisterWorm campaign, with consistent lateral movement via DaemonSets. However, this variant introduces a geopolitically targeted destructive payload aimed specifically at Iranian systems. The malware checks timezone and locale to identify Iranian systems, deploying privileged DaemonSets across every node in Kubernetes environments. Iranian nodes are wiped and force-rebooted, while non-Iranian nodes receive the CanisterWorm backdoor. The latest variant adds network-based lateral movement, exploiting exposed Docker APIs and using SSH for spread. This development shows TeamPCP's ability to operate at supply chain scale and their willingness to engage in destructive actions.

A sophisticated campaign targeting macOS developers has been uncovered, utilizing fake websites impersonating trusted platforms like Homebrew, TradingView, and LogMeIn to distribute Odyssey Stealer and AMOS malware. The attackers employ social engineering tactics, prompting users to paste base64-encoded commands in Terminal, which downloads malicious payloads. Over 85 phishing domains were identified, linked through shared SSL certificates and infrastructure. The campaign's infrastructure includes long-standing IP addresses showing multi-year activity. The malware attempts privilege escalation, performs anti-analysis checks, and disrupts backup services. This coordinated operation demonstrates the attackers' ability to adapt tactics and maintain persistence in the macOS ecosystem.

ChillyHell is a sophisticated macOS backdoor discovered in 2021 that has evaded detection by antivirus vendors. It is a modular C++ malware targeting Intel architectures, using multiple persistence mechanisms and communication protocols. The backdoor performs host profiling, establishes persistence through LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, or shell profile injection, and communicates with command and control servers via DNS or HTTP. ChillyHell's modular structure allows for various capabilities, including reverse shell access, self-updating, payload execution, and local password cracking. The malware's flexibility, stealth techniques, and notarization status make it a significant threat in the macOS landscape.

A sophisticated campaign using typo-squatted 'Spectrum' domains has been uncovered, spreading a new Atomic macOS Stealer (AMOS) variant. The attack, disguised as a CAPTCHA verification, employs dynamic payloads based on the victim's operating system. For macOS users, a malicious shell script steals system passwords and downloads an AMOS variant. The script uses native macOS commands to harvest credentials, bypass security, and execute malicious binaries. Russian-language comments in the source code suggest involvement of Russian-speaking cybercriminals. The campaign's delivery sites show flawed logic, indicating hasty assembly. This multi-platform social engineering attack targets both consumer and corporate users, highlighting an increasing trend in cross-platform threats.
