A fix is available and has been released in updated Ubuntu package versions: 1.18.0-6ubuntu14.22, 1.24.0-2ubuntu7.19, 1.28.3-2ubuntu1.12, and 1.30.4-7ubuntu1.1. Users should update their NGINX packages to these versions or later to remediate the vulnerability. Standard system updates will apply the necessary patches. No additional mitigation is required beyond applying these official fixes.
Description
A vulnerability in NGINX Plus and NGINX Open Source occurs when a location is configured using the alias directive combined with rewrite and set or return directives referencing the $request_filename variable, or when $request_filename is used in access log format directives. An unauthenticated attacker can send crafted HTTP requests to trigger a heap buffer overflow in the NGINX worker process, potentially causing a denial-of-service (DoS) or, on systems without ASLR or where ASLR is bypassed, remote code execution. This issue affects specific Ubuntu package versions and has been addressed in updated releases.
