Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CVE-2024-24772) in Apache Superset involves improper neutralization of custom SQL in an embedded context. A guest user can exploit the chart data REST API to submit arbitrary SQL queries. If these queries cause errors, sensitive information from the analytics database may be leaked. The flaw affects versions before 3.0.4 and from 3.1.0 before 3.1.1. Upgrading to 3.0.4 or 3.1.1 mitigates the issue.

Potential Impact

An attacker with guest user access can send arbitrary SQL statements through the chart data REST API. This can result in information disclosure from the underlying analytics database when errors occur. There is no indication of remote code execution or privilege escalation. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Superset to version 3.0.4 or 3.1.1 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No additional mitigation steps are required once the upgrade is applied.
